Candle Magic
Since ancient times fire and light have been revered and worshipped as divine elements. In Greek mythology it was Prometheus who was responsible for bringing fire down from heaven for the benefit of mankind. For this act of defiance he was severely punished by the gods.
Early humans probably regarded fire as a divine gift because the first fires they saw were created by lightening from the sky. Symbolically, light always represented good as it banished the shadows of the night and brought warmth and light to the dark Winter.
At first torches and lamps were used for illuminations but by 3000 BC beeswax candles were being used in the Middle East, both in houses and temples. When Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire the idea of using candles for religious purpose was borrowed from the old pagan ways and subsequently became a major feature of church rituals. Candles were especially used as votive offerings to the Virgin and the saints and as ‘eternal lamps’ over alters.
The use of candles for magical purposes ie over causing changes in accordance with will is as old as their original uses in temples and churches. Today candle burning has become a very popular form of the magical arts because it is so basic and simple.
Also you do not have to belong to any particular religion or spiritual belief system to practise candle magic, so can invoke, call upon or petition pagan gods or goddesses, angels, saints, ancestral spirits or whatever/whoever you choose to conceive to be the Cosmic Creator or Supreme Being.
Candle magic works in three ways. Firstly, the practitioner is focused on the candle and the ritual actions surrounding it. This brings the concentrated power of the mind into play. Images are formed in the subconscious can be liberated and brought into reality on the physical plane.
Secondly, the practitioner usually offers a petition or prayer to the divine being of choice to bring about the aim of the candle burning. Thirdly, the candle is lit and burnt so that it too becomes an offering to the powers that be.
This form of magic operates in conjunction with the astrological and occult correspondences used by magicians down the ages. Coloured candles have been available since 19th century and have made the work of the modern witch far easier.

Before beginning any type of magical ritual certain precautions and preparations should be made. Firstly you should protect yourself on a psychic level. This can be done quite easily by taking an herbal bath to ensure that your physical body is clean and purified. Do not eat a heavy meal or drink alcohol for several hours prior to the working as this interferes with psychic awareness.

Colour Codes

White is for spirituality, producing peaceful thoughts and contacting spirits guides and your guardian angel. It can also be used for dealing with mental problems and terminal illnesses such as cancer.
White candles can be used for all purposes when coloured ones are not available. They can also be used for emergencies or in seemingly impossible situations. Offer petitions to the archangel Lumiel, St Jude and St Philomena.
Red is the colour of energy, strength and courage, physical protection and sexual virility. Red candles are used to heal loss of energy or vitality and impotency.
Magically use this colour of candle for anything to do with mechanical things, craftsmanship or to protect from fire and violence. Invoke Mars, Aries and Tiw, the archangel Samael and saints Martin, Paul, George and Joan of Arc. Zodiacal signs: Aries and Scorpio.Yellow is the colour of the intellect and the mind. It rules creative imagination, communication and memory. It helps digestive, breathing and nervous problems.
Burn yellow candles for help in exams and education, writing, computers and the Internet, business and commerce, finding lost property and stolen goods, safety on short trips and air and land travel, also young people’s health concerns. Call upon Hermes, Mercury, Thoth, Ogma and woden, the archangel Raphael and saints Brigid, Anthony, Benedict, Christopher and Thomas Aquinas. Zodiacal signs: Gemini and Virgo.
Green is the colour of fertility, abundance, good luck and harmony. It helps lower the blood pressure and has a general calming effect.
Green candles can be used for anything to do with romantic love, friendship, the environment, gardening, music, the arts and fashion. Call Venus, Aphrodite, Fortuna, Hadondia, Freya, Isis, Astarte, Eros, Dionysus and Frey, the archangel Anael and saints Agnes, Brigid, Barbara, Cecilia, Martha, Anthony and Francis of Assisi. Zodiacal signs: Libra and Taurus.
Blue or silver is the colour of healing, occult wisdom and psychicism. It heals toothache, sore throats, migraines, shock. dysentery or inflamed eyes.
Use blue or silver candles for attaining psychic awareness, aiding conception and childbirth, all domestic matters and travel by water. Petition Diana, Artemis,and Hathor, the archangel Gabriel and saints Brigid, Lucy and Blaise. Zodiacal sign: Cancer.
Purple is the colour of financial success and highly developed psychic or spiritual powers. Used for lung problems and drug or alcohol addiction.

Black is the traditional colour of death in Western cultures (it is white in the East). When practising candle magic remember the following simple hints. First of all, the candle flame provides a focus for concentrating the powers of the will and the mind to bring about the desired changes.
Another candle of the appropriate zodiacal colour can be used to represent the second person in the ritual based on his/her Sun sign. This will prove especially useful for healing.
