The Celtic Year - The Shadow Time
This time marks the beginning of the Celtic winter at Samhain on 31st October and the beginning of the New Year. At this time cattle were brought down hills and the family ghosts were welcomed. The Sun would be encouraged to shine on the winter solstice (21st December) by the burning of oak or pine logs.
The season would end when the first ewe's milk was available to and was marked by the festival of Imbolc on 1st February.
